The Advent Wreath Minimize

Advent wreathAn Advent wreath has four candles on a circular base. Three candles are purple, and one pink. If white candles are used, it is common to tie a coloured bow to them. The base is covered with evergreen.

The symbolism of the wreath.
The circular base has no beginning and no end. It is like God Himself, who always was, and always will be. It is like God’s love for his people, which never ends. The greenery reminds us of life and growth. Jesus came to bring us life, life to the full. As Christians we try to grow ever closer to him.
The flame of the candle symbolises Jesus, the Light of the world, the light which darkness could not overpower. The purple candles remind us of who we are. Purple was the colour of royalty in the ancient world. We are a royal priesthood, dressed in our best for the arrival of the king of kings. The pink candle, lit on the third Sunday of Advent, reflects our joy that Christmas is so close. (This third Sunday is called "Gaudete Sunday" from the first lines of the Latin entrance prayer "Gaudete in Domino semper", "Rejoice in the Lord always".  If they are available, rose or pink vestments are worn.)

A brief Service of Blessing of the Advent wreath
(Can be used at home or school)

 Leader:
In the name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.
All:
As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end, amen.
Leader:
During the dark days of Advent we remember how much we need God's help. We remember how He kept His promise to His people long ago. We remember how Jesus helps us every day.
Leader
A reading from the prophet Isaiah.
The people that walked in darkness has seen a great light; on those who live in a land of deep shadow a light has shone. For there is a child born for us, a son given to us This is the name they give him: Wonder-Counsellor, Mighty-God, Eternal-Father, Prince-of-peace.

The first candle is put in place
Leader
Lord Jesus, you are God-with-us, the hope of all peoples.
All
Come to us, Lord Jesus.
The second candle is put in place

The third candle is put in place

The fourth candle is put in place

Lord Jesus, you are the light who overcomes all darkness.
All
Come to us, Lord Jesus.

Lord God, let your blessing come upon us when we light the candles of this wreath.
May they be a sign that Christ is in our home. May he come quickly, and not delay.
All
