A list of UK cities and towns with Google Maps 3D buildings imagery

3D image of Exeter CathedralHaving searched fruitlessly for a list of UK citiies that feature the 3D buildings imagery, like this one of Exeter Cathedral looking towards Dartmoor, I had to make one up myself ;  so I offer it as a service to other enthusiasts, hoping that Google Search and maybe other engines will eventually pick up this page and start listing it.  (Which I am pleased to see it has now done, only a couple of days later...)

This is the result of a couple of hours' searching in October 2017. I am in no doubt that the list is not complete. If you know of more UK locations, please tell me

How to use it ? In Google Maps, go to your satellite view and zoom in fairly close on the city centre. You will probably notice that even the top-down photo view looks a little different from what it used to. Holding down the Ctrl key, use your mouse to tilt and pan round the view - it's pretty intuitive. Some locations will let you go closer in than others. The effect is quite amazing - like being in your own camera-drone. Trees look a bit artificial, and there are some oddities at the edge of 3D'd zones, but it's great fun. I imagine it needs a fairly capable computer or phone and a good broadband speed. Images will take a little longer to load in sharp focus than usual.

16th February 2018 update - The city of Oxford, which puzzled me by its absence, has been added at some time in recent days. Thanks to Stephen White for the tip-off. Coverage goes out to Kidlington and the airport.

23rd March 2018 - Bath and Swindon have been added since the last update.

3rd July 2018 - Thank to Steve Logan for pointing out that Lowestoft is also included. (But not Aldeburgh or Cromer, so far.)

14th May 2019 - At some point in the last fortnight the town of Luton has been added.

Missing locations, as a few examples out of many, are Aberdeen, Dover, Durham, and my home town of High Wycombe.

Happy viewing !
